Lambert’s Cafe, Home of the Throwed Rolls

We left New Orleans today, crossing the Pontchartrain Bridge, which is 26 miles of bridge.  I found it to be disconcerting to be on a bridge and see nothing but bridge and water in every direction - no land in sight.

We got as far as Sikeston, Missouri, and had dinner at Lambert’s Cafe, Home of the Throwed Rolls.  It is almost impossible not to overeat at Lambert’s Cafe, so we got a room at a small motel in town and crashed for the night, leaving the last leg of the trip back to Alton for the next day.

New Orleans

Went back downtown and tried to take a carriage ride, but the driver wouldn’t go until he had a full carriage.  We didn't feel like standing around waiting so we left and just walked through the quarter.  We stopped for lunch at K-Paul’s Lousiana Kitchen, which was very good.  They served lunch family-style so we were seated at a table with another couple.  That turned out to be a good thing because we all got along fine; we each ordered something different and shared what we got with everyone else.  The menus at K-Pauls are hand-written every day.  We asked if we could take one home, and they gave us one of last week's menus.  We will probably frame it and hang it up in our new kitchen.

We took a trolley to the Garden Area and walked around there, looking at the big, stately homes.  Then we caught the trolley back to the French Quarter and (finally) took a carriage ride.  Afterwards we walked to a quieter area just outside of the Quarter.  It was full of small, pretty houses and small shops.  Standing in one of the shops, we suddenly realized that I was the only woman in the shop, and in fact I was the only woman in the whole area; this was the gay area.  We didn’t need anything there, so we went to the French Quarter and did some more shopping.  By then we were getting hungry again so we had more beignets and coffee (always a good idea in New Orleans), then split a chicken sandwich at La Margaret, and bought a muffaletta to take back to the hotel for a late-night snack.  At hotel we enjoyed soaking in the hot tub awhile before turning in.
