January 5th - Slept in late. Worked on taxes. Cleaned the RV. And then - to the beach! Along the beach road are condos and rental houses. The condo buildings are tall and try to give the impression of luxury, but the rental houses aim for cute. They are all sorts of colors - yellow, pink, blue, green - and usually set up on stilts with parking underneath.
The Gulf Shore beach is a very wide beach with lovely white sand; it looks almost like snow. And if you are barefoot and walk on it just right (scuff your heels a bit), it squeeks.
Little birds followed the surf in and out - rushing forward when the water receded to poke furiously at little holes in the sand (probably looking for tiny crabs or sand fleas), then scurrying back up the beach as the waves come in. There aren’t a lot of shells here - a local said it’s probably because of the big oil cleanup that was done - but we did find some pretty black shells. There are a lot of seagulls, and their footprints look like tiny stingrays swimming in the sand.
We stayed on the beach until sunset - always a wonderful bonus - then went to a seafood market to get scallops and seafood bisque for dinner. What a lovely day!
