November 5, 2012 - Another Trip to OZ

One of the outreach programs of Teresa’s church is creating and supporting an orphanage in Mexico.  And one of the activities they do to generate funds for the orphanage is an annual Tea Party.  Each table has one Hostess and seven guests.  The Hostess is responsible for decorating her table, providing small gifts for her guests, and supplying some of the sandwiches, tarts and treats that the kitchen dispenses.  Teresa has does for several years and has a reputation for putting together a fun table.  The other Hostess have somewhat formal, classy Tea Parties . . . but Teresa goes straight for the fun!  One year her theme was Hippies, and last year her theme was Rednecks, when she supplied her guests with T-shirts, fake “Bubba” teeth, a ride on a tractor and Mason jars for sippin' tea.  This year her theme was Wizard of Oz, inspired by the awesome play she directed last Spring at the Children’s Theater.  I can’t help with the baking but she did let me make some of the table decorations.  I used a bunch of cardboard rolls from empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls, some green paint and glitter, and made a little version of the Emerald City.

When we added a yellow brick road table runner (cardboard and black marker) strewn with red poppies, the table looked really good.  We also had a cute little tornado (upper left in the photo) with the small gray Kansas farmhouse spinning under it.

Teresa had costumes for us all to wear and I learned that I should be grateful my hair turned white instead of grey, because as Aunty Em, grey hair looks BAD on me.  The Wicked Witch of the West looks way better than me, and she's green!
