Rita, Randy and I drove out to Santillana del Mar one Sunday. We planned to stop and get something for lunch, but on Sunday there are no stores open. We tried several places, until we finally found a small store with someone inside who took pity on us and agreed to sell us some supplies. We bought sodas and some bread and butter, which we snacked on before continuing on.
Rita and I had visited here before and wanted to share it with Randy. The cathedral is the jewel of the town. It is not a fancy gothic cathedral, it was built and added on to between the 11th and 15th centuries, to serve a working community. I love the fact that the interior walls are simply the other side of the outside stone walls. No covering of plaster or wood, just cool-to-the-touch stone.
We walked around the town, enjoying the look of a Spanish town that hasn't changed much in centuries.
Visitors drove their cars into town, of course, but the locals traveled by a more time-honored method.
There was a local festival going on, with some people dressed up in a scarecrow sort of costume. We went through a small, newly opened museum, and bought souveniers (seashellls, swords, etc.) in the local shops.
On the way back home we got stuck in a traffic jam for 3 hours. There were no accidents or road construction going on, just traffic. We ate our leftover bread and butter, and planned an elaborate lifestyle for ourselves and the other traffic-bound motorists, in case we never got home.
