Our "Life Group", a group of people who meet every other week for Bible study, wanted to do something to make a difference. After some discussion the choice landed on teaching a robotic course at the church's high school, and Carlo and I volunteered to teach the class. This is a STEM class - science, technology, engineering, and math - which would be helpful in studying logic and mechanics, and very useful on a college application. It had to be after school hours and the students had to arrange transportation home afterwords; sometimes that's tricky when the parents have jobs. We started with six students, which was as large a class as we wanted to begin with. The actual teaching was done by Carlo, who has a lot of college degrees and an easy way of explaining things.
My job was to help the students as much as I could, and keep them focused on the tasks. Sometimes that was a real challenge!
The students used Lego Mindstorm kits to create and program robots. Although everyone had the same kit, every robot turned out differently.
Congratulations to the first Village View Academy Robotic Class!
