Today I saw a tiny little snake on our driveway. I wasn't sure what kind it was so I didn't get too close but I put my shoe down next to it for a size comparison. It decided the shoe would offer protection so it made a beeline over and scooted underneath it. Dang it, that was not what I intended.
I moved the shoe and it just sat there a moment, maybe a bit unhappy with me. I can't blame it, it's a scary world when you're that small.
I looked it up: it's a recently-hatched ring-necked snake (duh!), non-venomous, and they eat, among other things, small lizards. Good - if this one grows up, maybe it will eat some of the thousands of Anole lizards around here.
