There's nothing like a kid's birthday party!

We spent the weekend at Lance and Marla's place, celebrating Liam's birthday. Friday we goofed off a bit, then on Saturday I tagged along with Marla as she got decorations, cupcakes, and all sorts of miscellaneous party things. The guests started arriving around 2pm: they ended up with 16 children, a couple of babies, and lots of parents. Fortunately Lance and Marla had planned ahead - outside was a huge water slide!

All the kids (and some adults) had a ball on this thing until finally everyone was hungry. So the whole pack moved indoors for pizza, chips and cupcakes. The house was packed!
Soon the kids sorted themselves out. Most of the boys decided to have an Indian circle and tell stories.
The girls moved, en masse, to the enclosed patio to form a "Tempe Admiration Society". And this sweet old girl was lapping it up!
After most of the guests had gone we stayed up late talking, which made for a late start home on Sunday. That was a great weekend  - so happy to spend it with this wonderful family!

Scuba and Snorkel Equipment sale at Marion Market

Randy continues to help Marcia dispose of the remaining Dive Shop inventory. Now that the shop has been turned back to  the landlord, he's looking for other sales outlets. The Market of Marion is a big deal here so we rented a couple of spots one weekend. We set up a bunch of tables, filled them with inventory, and hung a tarp to block the sun

Even with the tarp and a couple of fans, it was too HOT! But we were there Saturday and Sunday, doing our best. Snorkel stuff went better than scuba gear but Randy was able to help a guy get an amazing deal on a scuba setup, so that was good for him and good for us. One less bin to pack up when it was time to go!

Headed to Key Largo

We dropped Shorty off at at the vet's at 8, then drove south. We didn't want to stop so we just snacked in the truck; our truck averaged 22.8 mpg this trip, which we thought was pretty good!

All the Keys we drove through were full of shops, seafood, and boat tours. Most Keys were small enough that we could see water on both sides from the road, even when we weren't on a bridge.

When we reached Key Largo we drove around looking for a likely restaurant and ended up at The Original Mrs Mac for a Fish Sandwich and Mahi Caesar wrap. It was worth the stop - the blackened fish was a bit spicy but it was all good.

When we got to our hotel to check in, we found that they don't have an elevator. Our room was on the 2nd story but fortunately we didn't over-pack so it wasn't a problem. Our first thought was that the place wasn't particularly special. So we unpacked and headed down to the small beach behind the hotel. Any beach of sand is unusual in this area - it's mostly rocks - so even a little beach like this is kind of a big deal. But it's not much of a beach!

We went wading anyway.  We met Keana and Andrew at our beach, another first-time visitor couple to the Keys.

Drove to see the beach in another area, not associated with a hotel. Not bad, but the water was quite cool and very, very shallow. We could walk a long way out and still not be able to snorkel. Oh, well - time for dinner. We went to the Cracked Conch Cafe which seemed popular and looked really good. It  should have been great, but it was a little short on flavor.

Smokin' Grouper

Recently when we were visiting Chad (one of Randy's scuba diving friends), he opened his freezer and gave us 6 big grouper heads. They are not pretty, but Chad said they have a lot of meat on them. OK...

Randy fired up his smoker with apple wood and put the grouper in for a few hours.
Afterwards they were even less pretty
But Chad was right, there was a lot of delicious meat there - several pounds of it.
Randy made some of it into a spread. And this is soooo good! Not at all "fishy" - it's smoky and meaty and slightly sweet - best sandwich spread ever.

Alexander Springs

Today Randy went to Alexander Springs with Gregg, who wanted to get in the water safely before an upcoming trip. First up: gear up and carry everything down to the water.

Then Randy spent time reviewing how the various scuba equipment works and how to safely manage everything.

Then, at the end, they fulfilled the Diver's creed:  "Divers carry stuff"!
